Local Code List 3.x

A GS1 participating country may impose restrictions on the proper use within one country of a globally standardized code list. In one country there may be:

• A sub-set of target market defined valid values from within the full set of the global code list provided in the GS1 XML schema, EANCOM and EPC
• A sub-set of target market defined valid values from within the full set of the global code list provided in the GS1-adopted ISO standard code list or other external standard body code list
• A sub-set of target market defined valid values for a valid subset of valid types, excluding other global values from use in that country that are for other types
• Open text fields in the global standards that are restricted to a local set of code lists by the defined target market

   

• GS1 MO defined valid values
• Data Recipient defined valid values

In each of the cases above, the use of the global standard in the one country is restricted to a sub-set of valid values and the rest of the globally approved values cannot be used. The inherent problem for a trading partner engaging in electronic commerce in a region is to identify which value is valid:

• in which country
• for which context
• according to which authority
• for use in a country that the trading partner is exporting to
• for use in a country that the trading partner is importing from
