Pilots were conducted to help establish best practices for the implementation of the GS1 Global Data Model.
Learnings from these pilots include the need for organisations to invest in the right people, processes and technology—however, a positive return on investment is expected as the top-line and operational efficiency benefits are expected to outweigh the initial one-time investment.
One-time investment and operational changes
People
Organisations will need to train employees involved in data creation, exchange, verification and usage on the GS1 Global Data Model attributes, definitions and updated processes.
Processes
Product data will need to be mapped with the GS1 Global Data Model and updated for existing GTINs. Brand owners estimate it could take months to update all data for existing products.
Technology
Organisations will need to identify technological gaps and implement changes to current systems (APIs, data systems and operational systems) to comply with the GS1 Global Data Model.
Implementation pilots pave the way for future success
The GS1 Global Data Model v1.0 was piloted in three regions: Europe, Latin America and North America. Asia Pacific and Middle East & Africa will be coming in 2020. The primary objectives of the pilots were to collect learnings needed to improve or implement the GS1 Global Data Model and establish “what it will take” to implement.
Perspectives from pilot participants
With the GS1 Global Data Model we are providing consistent information to consumers across retailers and markets.
Sharing data with GS1 Global Data Model retailers is faster than with non-GS1 Global Data Model retailers.
The GS1 Global Data Model will reduce time spent on quality checks because we are improving accuracy and completeness.
With the GS1 Global Data Model it is easier to launch new products at both the digital and physical shelf.
The GS1 Global Data Model makes it easier to understand and use attributes in our business.
It is beneficial for companies when all product information (B2B and B2C content) comes together in one complete ‘package’ for new items or product changes/updates.
Implementation tools
The GS1 business implementation overview provides best practices and detailed information on how an organisation should go about implementing the GS1 Global Data Model.
GS1 Global Data Model navigator
Use this database application to explore the set of attributes which are relevant for your product and geography, and as well have a clear definition for each of these attributes.
GS1 Global Data Model attribute analysis tool
Use this spreadsheet to perform an attribute analysis comparing the GDM attributes to your internal data model. The gaps or missing attributes will define your level of readiness and will help in creating an implementation roadmap.
GS1 Global Data Model attribute implementation guide
The attribute implementation guide provides clarity and practical business advice about the use of the GDM attributes.
